Troubleshooting Google Flow Error Tiles: Causes, Detection, and Recovery
What are Google Flow error tiles?
Google Flow error tiles are specialized DOM elements (<flow-error-tile> or .error-tile) rendered on the Google Flow canvas when an image generation fails. They typically indicate cloud quota exhaustion, temporary server rate limits, network WebSocket disconnections, or content moderation filter rejections.
When using automated prompt queues, encountering an error tile without verification can lead to missing scenes. Flowmator’s Safe Sequence Mode actively detects these nodes and triggers recovery procedures.
1. Common Causes of Google Flow Error Tiles
Google Flow generally displays error tiles under three distinct conditions:
A. Rate Limits & Cloud Quota Exhaustion
- Symptom: Error message states “Too many requests” or “Unusual activity detected”.
- Root Cause: Prompts were submitted faster than your Google Cloud account’s token allocation allows.
- Solution: Allow Flowmator’s 12-second cool-off delay to complete. Ensure you are not running multiple simultaneous browser tabs submitting to Google Flow simultaneously.
B. Content Safety & Moderation Filters
- Symptom: Error message states “Prompt flagged by safety guidelines” or “Generation failed due to policy”.
- Root Cause: A keyword or combination of descriptors in your prompt triggered Google’s automated safety filters (e.g. violent keywords, copyrighted brand names, or sensitive terms).
- Solution: Click the ✏️ Edit button in the Flowmator queue next to the failed prompt. Soften sensitive descriptive terms (e.g. change “bloody confrontation” to “dramatic silhouette standoff”), then click 🔄 Retry.
C. Server-Side Cloud Render Timeouts
- Symptom: Canvas displays a circular loading spinner that eventually turns into a blank gray tile with a retry icon.
- Root Cause: Cloud GPU nodes failed to complete diffusion steps within the allotted window during high server congestion.
- Solution: Click 🔄 Retry. If cloud latency regularly exceeds 90 seconds, temporarily switch to Turbo Interval Mode with a 60–90 second delay.
2. How Flowmator Intercepts and Handles Error Tiles
Flowmator’s Safe Sequence Mode continuously monitors the canvas for error tiles:
const currentErrorTiles = document.querySelectorAll('flow-error-tile, .error-tile');
if (currentErrorTiles.length > beforeErrorCount) {
const latestError = currentErrorTiles[currentErrorTiles.length - 1];
const errorMsg = latestError.querySelector('.error-message-text')?.textContent?.trim() ||
'Google Flow: Generation Failed';
return { status: 'failed', reason: errorMsg };
}
When an error tile appears:
- Error Extraction: The exact message is captured and logged.
- Cool-off Period: If retries remain (
attempts <= maxRetries), Flowmator initiates a 12-second countdown to clear rate limits. - Queue Halt (Sequence Protector): If retries are exhausted, Flowmator halts the queue, sounds a Web Audio chime, and prompts you to choose between:
- Retry Prompt: Resets attempts and re-triggers the scene.
- Edit Prompt: Modifies the wording inline.
- Skip & Continue: Bypasses the frame and proceeds with the rest of the queue.
